The Punjab Prisons Department has reported to the Lahore High Court that inmates have been smuggling drugs into jails by concealing them in sensitive body parts, prompting a province-wide screening initiative. According to Pakistan Today, this revelation led to the implementation of a formal screening mechanism at the time of prisoner admission, aligning with the Nelson Mandela Rules for humane prison management. Between January 1 and October 31, 2025, a total of 10,166 drug tests were conducted, identifying 3,873 inmates as drug users, as noted by ProPakistani.
