Meta Executive Critiques Facebook Messenger Encryption Plan In Court

Recent court filings in a New Mexico lawsuit have revealed significant internal concerns at Meta regarding the implementation of end-to-end encryption for Facebook Messenger and Instagram. Despite warnings from executives, including Monika Bickert, Meta's head of content policy, who stated, "We are about to do a bad thing as a company. This is so irresponsible," the company proceeded with the encryption plan initiated in 2019. The lawsuit, led by New Mexico Attorney General Raul Torrez, alleges that this encryption has hindered the company's ability to detect and report child exploitation cases, potentially enabling predators to exploit minors without oversight.
