Record 129 Journalists Killed In 2025, Majority By Israel

In a shocking report released by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ), 2025 has been marked as the deadliest year on record for journalists, with a staggering 129 fatalities documented globally. Of these, two-thirds, or 86 journalists, were killed by Israeli forces, primarily during the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The CPJ noted that this pattern of violence against the press is unprecedented, stating, "This marks back-to-back record years for press fatalities due to Israel’s continued and unprecedented targeting of journalists and media workers." The report highlights that over 60% of those killed by Israeli fire were Palestinian reporters, emphasizing the dire situation in conflict zones like Gaza, where human rights organizations have described the violence as amounting to genocide. Furthermore, the report indicates that Israel was responsible for 81% of the 47 killings classified as intentionally targeted murders, a statistic that underscores the severity of the situation.
