In a significant development, ride-hailing service inDrive has taken decisive action against an organized scam that has defrauded over 80,000 of its courier delivery riders in Pakistan. The scam, which emerged approximately six months ago, involved individuals impersonating military officers to trick riders into transferring money under false pretenses. Victims reported losing amounts as high as Rs 30,000, with many being coerced into making payments through platforms like JazzCash or Easypaisa. Awais Saeed, inDrive's Country Manager for Pakistan, stated, "After multiple complaints from couriers, we initiated an internal investigation and lodged a formal complaint with the National Cyber Crime Investigation Authority (NCCIA) in Islamabad." The company has since blacklisted accounts associated with military titles and blocked a total of 80,000 accounts linked to fraudulent activity, with fewer than ten users claiming wrongful bans, indicating the majority were indeed scammers.
