In a recent development, the Pakistani government has halted the transition of net metering users to net billing, as announced by Federal Minister for Energy Owais Leghari. This decision, made at the directive of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, was communicated during a National Assembly session. Leghari explained that the transition plan had been under consideration for the past eight to nine months and was discussed in the Economic Coordination Committee and the Cabinet. According to Aaj TV Latest, Leghari stated, 'The net metering system was introduced in 2017, and NEPRA has amended its regulations four to five times since then.' The current solar energy production in the country stands at 20,000 to 22,000 megawatts, with 6,000 to 7,000 megawatts generated through net metering, which constitutes only 8-10% of the total solar output.
