The Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) has initiated an investigation into the Federal Board of Revenue's (FBR) decision to dissolve an Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee (ADRC). According to Business Recorder, the ADRC had previously issued a decision in favor of a corporate taxpayer, which was subsequently disregarded by senior tax officials. The FTO, Zafar Ul Haq Hijazi, took notice after a complaint was filed by a compliant taxpayer, accusing FBR officers of 'deliberate manipulation and misrepresentation' in the tax dispute. The ADRC, which included a former judge of the Lahore High Court, was dissolved following its favorable decision for the taxpayer, raising concerns about transparency and procedural integrity within the FBR. The FTO has ordered a formal investigation into these allegations, highlighting the ongoing tension between tax authorities and taxpayers in Pakistan.
